Searching for Family Members
Every now and then we think about tracking down family members we have not seen in years. They may be aunts, uncles, or cousins or perhaps more distant relatives. In a society where the average nuclear family moves once every five years, larger families quickly break up and go their separate ways. But that sense of belonging to a clan of your own is important, especially to children when they are meeting new friends.
Through the years many sites have published tips on how to find family members. Magazines from time to time publish articles listing resources you can use in your search for relatives. But sometimes it is helpful to seek the advice of an experienced professional or to look for alternatives to the most well-known resources.
For example, some people who have written multiple articles on how to find a relative may recap those articles in a special “little directory” that collates all the information you need to know. Searching for a relative whom you haven’t spoken with in years, who may even have passed away, can be a challenging task for someone who is unfamiliar with all the available resources.
When you cannot afford professional help there is sometimes still the occasional professional who is willing to provide online advice and tips that help you structure your search. Don’t give up before you have checked out at least half a dozen Websites and services. There should be plenty of helpful hints out there if you just know where to look for them.
